First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid
PHECC has designed the First Aid Essentials Standard to offer appropriate training to individuals and groups who require a basic first aid skill set including cardiac first response.
There are three distinct streams to the First Aid Essentials programme, all designed around course delivery in one day (6.5 hours teaching time) and including a core module of CFR-Community.

This Course is delivered over 6.5 contact hours and usually over 1 day.
Introduction to First Aid
- The role of the First Aider.
- Importance of scene safety awareness.
- Barriers to effective patient and team communication.
- Patient capacity and how to seek consent for treatment.
- Signs & symptoms of abuse and/ or neglect.
- Wellbeing of the responder.
Patient Assessment
- Vital signs, Primary and Secondary Survey
Common Medical Emergencies
- Diabetic emergency, Asthma, Seizures, poisons, anaphylaxis, sepsis, fainting
Injury Management
- Wound care and bleeding control
- Fracture management and immobilisation
Cardiac First Response
- CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants
- Proper use of automated external defibrillators (AED)
Paediatric First Aid is aimed at early years sector or people with a general interest in first aid e.g. parents/guardians/foster families.
Our training combines theoretical knowledge with practical hands-on exercises to ensure participants develop the necessary skills.
The methods include:
- Lectures and Presentations: Engaging sessions to cover theoretical aspects.
- Practical Demonstrations: Hands-on demonstrations of first aid techniques.
- Scenario-based Training: Realistic scenarios to practice emergency response skills.
- Interactive Discussions: Opportunities for participants to ask questions and share experiences.
Participants who successfully complete the First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid Training will receive a dual accredited C-TAC / PHECC First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid Certificate which is valid for two years.
